Letter from SAVA:

Dear Parents,

Over the past few years we have worked to make an impact in our community by providing opportunities for young athletes to experience volleyball from a knowledgeable staff and coaches. Over that time, we have seen our young program grow. It has been extremely rewarding and has made a difference in our lives and, hopefully, in the lives of the athletes.

It was our hope that we could grow a free league and make a cost-effective product for players and families. We have had a hard time finding outside participation that we can rely on. Last year’s final competition date had a committed club, that informed us on a Tuesday, that the seventeen teams that were supposed to attend were not coming to the tournament the upcoming Saturday. To be fully transparent, this was not the first club or group to do this. After last year, we decided that we would need to re-evaluate the service we were providing. It is our conclusion that we cannot continue to keep the same business model.

5 Questions for the future of SAVA

1.       Can we make a positive impact in our community?

2.       Can we provide a cost-effective service, while also creating a competitive volleyball club?

3.       What price point allows us to pay for gym rental, coaches, gear, tournament entry fees, etc?

4.       Are there organizations that we can join that would allow families the opportunity to experience travel volleyball within a close proximity to Mobile? What would be the additional costs?

5.       After learning what we have, what are our needs as a club going forward?

Here are our conclusions:
We believe we can provide the best training in the Mobile and surrounding areas, and we are grateful to the Jaguar Volleyball Staff and players who are engaged members of our club. We believe that there is a need for a club like SAVA.

For our younger groups (12 and under), we are working with other grassroots organizations to provide similar to what we have done in the past. The teams of these ages were easier to get reliable and consistent participation. As of now, no major changes in the 12 and under groups.

For our older groups (13 and up), we have participated with the AAU for the past two years. It is cheaper but, in our region, lacks membership and available tournaments. In 2024, SAVA will make the jump to participate in the USAV system.

Moving forward:
At the conclusion of the Jaguar Volleyball teams’ season, participating members of SAVA will have the opportunity to start training with us in the month of December, during the break. Our official club season will start in January and finish at the end of April. Each team will look to participate in, a minimum of, 5 tournaments. There will be three practices each week. Two within the week and one on the weekend. Each athlete will receive two practice shirts, three game jerseys, two pairs of spandex, a sweatshirt, and a backpack.

Fee breakdown:
There is a USAV fee of $95 that goes directly to USAV and not SAVA. This fee is separate from your SAVA dues. For your convenience, you can find the link on our website here.

There is a $50 tryout fee.
If placed on a team there is a $500 deposit that is due within one week of placement.
Starting in January, there will be a $325 monthly payment due by the 5th of each month. If paid after the 5th there is a mandatory $25 late fee.

The total cost for participation in a season is $1850. This cost covers the cost of the gym, coaching fees, gear, tournament fees, etc. Any athlete interested in participating in SAVA will need to bring a completed USAV membership form to the tryout. Athletes will not be able to tryout/participate without this form.

Tryout Dates:
October 19th and 20th is 12’s through 14’s.
November 3rd and 4th is 15’s through 18’s.
Tryouts will be held in Jag Gym located on the campus of South Alabama. Please see SAVolleyballAcademy.com for location, times, tryout registration, USAV membership details, and liability/medical waivers.

We will have an in-person parent meeting on October 14th at 5:45pm to answer any questions you might have, this is not mandatory. This meeting will also be in Jag Gym.

Thank you for being the best part of our volleyball community! As always, if there are any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.
